State Impact Center Launches New Health & Environmental Settlements Project
New initiative will review settlement structures used to resolve major health and environmental liability claims

Washington, D.C. — The State Energy & Environmental Impact Center at NYU School of Law (State Impact Center) announced today the launch of a new Health & Environmental Settlements Project (Settlements Project). The State Impact Center’s Settlements Project will engage outside experts to provide a retrospective review of judicial and legislative settlement structures that have been utilized to resolve major health and environmental damage claims associated with tobacco, oil spills, and toxic disposal sites, among others.
The Project’s final report will provide a comprehensive, independent resource that all parties looking to learn from past resolutions of difficult health and environmental liability disputes can consult.
The Settlements Project will proceed in two phases, including an initial Convening of Experts to take place in March 2019 at the NYU School of Law, and the preparation of a final report targeted for release in late 2019 or early 2020. The State Impact Center encourages qualified experts to submit an expression of interest in participating in the project by December 14, 2018.
