Wisconsin AG Obtained Civil Judgment against Dairy Company for Water Pollution

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul secured a judgment against Ellsworth Cooperative Creamery over alleged wastewater discharge permit violations at the company’s cheesemaking facility. According to the lawsuit, for nearly five years, the company frequently exceeded the permitted levels of a number of substances in discharged wastewater, such as ammonia and phosphorus, and also exceeded permitted temperatures of discharged water. These violations affected nearby water quality, killing wildlife and endangering human health. Under the judgment, the company must pay $250,000 in penalties and take steps to prevent future permit violations.
