Twenty-Two AGs Filed Motion in Defense of Federal Fuel Economy Standards
AUGUST 1, 2022
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Governor Gavin Newsom led a coalition of 22 AGs, as well as the city and county of Denver, and the cities of Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco, in filing a motion to intervene in defense of federal fuel economy standards for light duty vehicles. Previously, AG Bonta led a multistate coalition urging the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to adopt stricter fuel economy standards for 2024-2026 model year vehicles, which NHTSA adopted. In the August 2022 motion, the coalition sought to join NHTSA to defend these standards from challenges from other states and a petroleum industry group.
