Thirteen AGs Sent Comments Urging DOE to Adopt Energy Standards for Stoves, Ovens
APRIL 17, 2023
New York Attorney General Letitia James led a coalition of 13 attorneys general and the City of New York in submitting comments urging the Department of Energy (DOE) to adopt energy conservation standards for certain cooking appliances, including electric and gas cooktops, ranges, and ovens. According to DOE, the standards would result in $4.5 billion in environmental, consumer, and health benefits over 30 years. In their comments, the AGs emphasized the importance of those benefits, and also added that the standards would improve indoor air quality, which the AGs called a “significant [but] as-yet unquantified” benefit. The coalition also explained that DOE’s standards would especially benefit communities who have historically faced energy insecurity and disproportionately unhealthy air quality. The AGs urged DOE to finalize the standards swiftly.
