Sixteen AGs Sent Comments on DOE’s Updated Petroleum Equivalency Factor
JUNE 12, 2023
California Attorney General Rob Bonta led a coalition of 16 attorneys general, along with the Cities of Chicago and New York, in submitting comments on the Department of Energy’s proposed updates to its “petroleum equivalency factor,” which is used in calculating how electric vehicles count for purposes of a vehicle manufacturers’ average fleetwide fuel economy. In their comments, the AGs argued that the proposed metric, which replaced data from over two decades ago with more recent data, will both improve fuel efficiency across the combustion vehicle industry and motivate growth in the electric vehicle industry.
