Six AGs Sent Comments Urging EPA to Strengthen Effluent Limitations Guidelines for the Meat and Poultry Industries
MARCH 25, 2024
California Attorney General Rob Bonta and Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul led a coalition of six attorneys general in filing comments responding to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed revisions to the technology-based effluent limitations guidelines and standards for the meat and poultry products point source category. In their comments, the AGs supported EPA’s decision to update the regulations, but argued that the updates do “not go nearly far enough to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act.” Specifically, the AGs explained that in choosing not to adopt the strongest possible regulations, EPA relied on “unverified industry concerns” and failed to consider the environmental justice impacts of less stringent protections, which had been identified in the agency’s own analysis.
