Six AGs Sent Comments on Federal Ocean Justice Strategy

California Attorney General Rob Bonta led a coalition of six attorneys general in sending comments responding to the Council on Environmental Quality’s (CEQ) request for information on developing a national ocean justice strategy. In their comments, the AGs recommended seven objectives that CEQ should focus on in order to promote equity for communities that have been historically excluded from ocean policy discussions and decisions, including BIPOC communities, people with disabilities, low-income communities, and the youth and the elderly (collectively, ocean justice communities). The objectives the AGs recommended included: meaningful engagement of ocean justice communities early in the process of developing federal actions; equitable public access to the oceans, coasts, and the Great Lakes; equitable protection from port and maritime activities; equitable protection from pollution; equitable management and protection of the oceans, coasts, and the Great Lakes; addressing past harms and injustices; and equitable adaptation to climate change.
