Rhode Island AG Secured Settlement Over Air Quality Violations at Metal Shredding Facility

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, together with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, secured a settlement with SMM New England Corporation, operator of a metal shredding facility in Johnston, Rhode Island, over violations of the Rhode Island Clean Air Act. Under the terms of the settlement, the company must install equipment to control emissions of volatile organic compounds, particulate matter, and toxic air contaminants from the facility, and pay a record $875,000 penalty to the state.
