Rhode Island AG Reached Settlement Exxon over MTBE Contamination

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha reached a settlement with Exxon Mobil over the company’s role in contaminating the state’s soil and groundwater with methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE), a dangerous gasoline additive. Exxon is required to pay $6 million under the settlement, which will go towards MTBE clean-up efforts. This agreement is the final in a series of settlements between Rhode Island and large oil refiners over MTBE contamination, bringing the total amount of funds the state has secured from MTBE litigation to $26 million.
