Rhode Island AG Filed Comments Detailing Potential Harms of Offshore Drilling

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin “submitted formal comments to the Interior Department’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management opposing the 2019-2024 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program which would open up the North Atlantic Regional Outer Continental Shelf to oil and gas exploration and drilling. In the letter, AG Kilmartin emphasized that Rhode Island’s “irreplaceable natural resources would be put in jeopardy at every step of this unnecessary and unwise process, from disruptive testing and drilling needed to locate deposits, to the toll taken during extraction, transfer and transport of fuels, and the possible spills and blowouts that history shows occur during drilling activity.”
