Rhode Island AG Announced Million Dollar Settlement over MTBE Contamination

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced that the state’s lawsuit against three oil and gas companies has been resolved. The case alleged that Chevron, Irving, and Valero were responsible for polluting Rhode Island’s soil and groundwater with gasoline additive methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE). The companies were required to pay a combined fee of $1.775 million to go towards emergency response and ongoing MTBE contamination remediation efforts.
