Oregon AG Filed Lawsuit & Announced Settlement with Monsanto over PCB Manufacturing & Distribution
JANUARY 24, 2018
On January 24, 2018, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum filed a lawsuit against Monsanto over its manufacturing, selling, and distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a toxic chemical compound that was used in various industrial and residential products, including paint and copy paper, until it was banned in 1977. PCBs have neurological, reproductive, and other harmful effects in humans and wildlife, and are resistant to environmental degradation. According to the complaint, Monsanto continued manufacturing PCBs even though it was aware of the compound’s harmful health effects as early as 1937.
On December 15, 2022, AG Rosenlum announced a $698 million settlement with Monsanto.
