New York AG Sued School Bus Company for Idling in EJ Communities and Near Schools

New York Attorney General Letitia James reached a settlement with a Bronx school bus company over illegal idling by its 300-bus fleet, which created unsafe air conditions in nearby low-income communities and communities of color. The AG’s office found that this company frequently violated city laws that restrict idling for more than one minute near schools and three minutes elsewhere, with some of the company’s buses idling for over two hours multiple times a month. In addition to paying nearly $40,000 in penalties, the company must train its drivers in anti-idling, monitor idling going forward, and either purchase an electric school bus by 2025 or pay an additional $66,000.
