New York AG Reached Settlement with Bayer and Monsanto for Falsely Advertising Weedkiller as Safe

New York Attorney General Letitia James reached a settlement with Bayer and Monsanto for falsely advertising “Roundup” consumer weedkillers as safe and non-toxic, violating state consumer protection laws. These actions also violated a settlement that Monsanto had previously reached with the NY AG Office in 1996 regarding false advertising about the safety of the same products. Despite the companies marketing the products as safe for “anything but weeds,” in reality, the products are harmful to wildlife, including pollinators, an essential but quickly-vanishing part of the ecosystem. The settlement required the companies to pay a total of $6.9 million, which will be used to “prevent, abate, restore, mitigate, or control the impacts of toxic pesticides.”
