New Jersey AG Filed Lawsuit against Waste Disposal Company and Property Owner over Hazardous Pollution

In December 2018, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed a lawsuit against a recycling company (Jersey Recycling Services, LLC) and the owner of the property the company was operating on (Fillit Corporation) for failing to comply with 2014 orders from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to clean up unauthorized waste at a site in Burlington County. The lawsuit sought civil penalties and a court order requiring the companies to “remediate and properly dispose of the solid and hazardous materials on site and to restore the damaged wetlands.” This action was part of a tranche of lawsuits taken as part of the New Jersey AG Office’s environmental justice initiative.

In September 2023, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and DEP announced that it had reached a settlement with Fillit and Jersey Recycling Services, LLC that included civil penalties and protection of affected wetlands.
