New Jersey AG Filed Lawsuit against Property Owner for Failing to Clean Up Hazardous Pollution
DECEMBER 6, 2018
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed a lawsuit against SL Industries, Inc., the property owners of a site that was formerly a nickel and chrome plating facility, which discharged significant amounts of contaminated wastewater into the soil on a daily basis while in operation. Prior to 1984, this site, known as Puchack Wellfield Superfund Site, provided drinking water to the City of Camden, but this service had to be terminated due to the hazardous substances. AG Grewal, along with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, sought “damages for injuries to natural resources caused by the discharges of hazardous substances, [and recovery of] cleanup and removal costs that have been incurred in the past and will be incurred in the future at the site.” This action was part of a tranche of lawsuits taken as part of the New Jersey AG Office’s environmental justice initiative.
