New Jersey AG Filed Lawsuit against Owners of Gas Station over Decades of Gasoline Seepage
DECEMBER 6, 2018
In December 2018, New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) filed a lawsuit against Monk’s Amoco, Inc., the owner of a gas station in Camden, for hazards caused by gasoline seepage from the facility. DEP has attempted to hold the company accountable for decades, including by excavating seven different gasoline underground storage tanks over a period of 12 years. In this lawsuit, DEP sought “to recover its costs from the responsible parties.” This action was part of a tranche of lawsuits taken as part of the New Jersey AG Office’s environmental justice initiative.
In September 2023, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and DEP announced that they had reached a settlement with Monk’s Amoco, which involved cleanup of the property, reimbursement of DEP’s remediation costs, and additional civil penalties.
