New Jersey AG Filed Lawsuit against Manufacturers and Sellers of PFAS Products

New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal filed a lawsuit against eight companies — including 3M, DuPont and Chemours — over the manufacture and sale of firefighting products containing harmful per- and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFAS). In the complaint, AG Grewal alleged that the companies produced, advertised and sold aqueous film-forming foam products for decades despite knowing that they contained hazardous PFAS chemicals. The complaint explained the severe public health and environmental threat posed by PFAS chemicals, and emphasized that the contaminants “are mobile, persist indefinitely in the environment, bioaccumulate in individual organisms and humans, and biomagnify up the food chain.” The lawsuit sought payment for the costs of a full investigation and remediation and restoration efforts, as well as natural resource damages and other penalties.
