Michigan AG Saved Residents Millions in Energy Costs

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel advocated on behalf of consumers in a case that featured a request by Consumers Energy Company, before the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC), for a “an annual increase in revenues of approximately $272 million.” The request, left unchallenged, would have led to an increase in rates for residents by over 6%. AG Nessel provided testimony that argued for a lower rate increase and proposed a change to the distribution of these rates in order “to lessen the unfair burden on residential customers.” The MPSC approved the settlement of the amended request which provided for various equitable and environment justice focused considerations in addition to a lower rate increase. AG Nessel’s intervention in the initial request is expected to save residents millions in energy costs.
