Michigan AG Filed Complaint against CAFO for Illegal Discharge of Waste
JUNE 16, 2023
In June 2023, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a complaint against Zimba Dairy, a concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO), for discharging waste into state waters without the required permit, damaging nearby wetlands and inland streams. According to the complaint, the company has failed to manage the wastewater stemming from the confinement of its cows. Additionally, the company has illegally stockpiled agricultural waste (which has resulted in runoff that harmed aquatic life), and has also illegally installed culverts too close to wetlands and inland streams.
In April 2024, AG Nessel filed an amended complaint against the company. In May 2024, the court granted a preliminary injunction that required the company to immediately stop discharging wastewater at all of its locations.
