Michigan AG Filed Comments Criticizing EPA’s Inadequate Recommendations on PFAS Contamination

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed comments with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) highlighting deficiencies in the agency’s draft interim screening and cleanup standards for addressing the nationwide per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination crisis. AG Nessel emphasized that there is “room for improvement in the scope and protectiveness” of the EPA’s recommendations, and urged the agency to commit to revisiting the standards in the future and incorporating information from other federal agencies “so that any final standards reflect the best available information.” Attorney General Nessel also encouraged the EPA to “set a timeframe” for addressing PFAS contaminants beyond perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), the specific variants covered by the agency’s initial recommendations.
