Maryland AG Secured Settlement over Fuel Leak in Overburdened and Underserved Community

In February 2023, Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown filed a lawsuit against Tri-Gas & Oil Co., Inc., a fuel storage facility on the Eastern Shore over groundwater and creek pollution resulting from a fuel leak at the company’s Federalsburg location.

In January 2024, AG Brown announced a settlement had been reached, including a $600,000 penalty for the pollution and requires the company to continue cleanup efforts. The settlement mandated compliance with an interim cleanup plan to address groundwater contamination. According to the Maryland Department of the Environment’s environmental justice screening tool, the affected community is overburdened and underserved.
