Maryland AG Filed Complaint against County Commission for Repeated Sewage Overflows

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh filed a civil complaint against St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission (MetCom) requesting civil penalties and an injunction to stop sewage overflows from contaminating nearby waters and natural resources. According to the complaint, since 2017, MetCom discharged over two million gallons of untreated sewage into state and U.S. waters and nearby ground surface. In 2021, oysters harvested following an overflow caused a foodborne illness outbreak.
