Maryland AG Announced Settlement with Freight Carrier Company to Resolve Clean Water Act Violations

Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced a consent decree with ABF Freight System, a freight carrier company, to resolve allegations that it violated conditions of its Clean Water Act permits. Specifically, the company allegedly failed to clean up wastewater spills, implement spill and stormwater runoff prevention measures, complete required training, and monitor stormwater discharges. “Stormwater runoff from industrial facilities can pick up pollutants like trash, chemicals, oils, and sediment that can harm waters throughout the country. Pollutants in stormwater can affect waterways and local plants and animals, increase flooding, decrease aquatic biological diversity, and increase sedimentation and erosion,” explained the AG’s office. Under the proposed settlement, the company was required to pay a civil penalty and begin complying with its permits.
