Illinois AG Successfully Promoted Legislation to Strengthen Oversight of Alternative Retail Energy Suppliers

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul successfully promoted state legislation to protect consumers from “misleading and deceptive” tactics employed by some alternative retail energy suppliers. The Home Energy Affordability and Transparency (HEAT) Act will ensure consumers can make informed decisions about switching from a public utility to an alternative energy supplier by ensuring access to complete information on how their utility bills will be affected. The legislation aims to protect consumers from “misleading marketing practices that take advantage of consumer confusion and lack of information,” which have been particularly harmful to low-income communities and communities of color.
