Illinois AG Filed Lawsuit against Utility Company over Release of Coal Ash

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a lawsuit against City, Water, Light, and Power for allegedly releasing over 700 tons of coal ash into the atmosphere and the ground from its Springfield power generation station in August of 2021. The station is located in an community designated as an “environmental justice concern” area by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. “This lawsuit and interim order prioritize the safety of Springfield residents while working closely with CWLP to ensure an incident like this does not happen again. The order entered today is a first step, requiring CWLP to thoroughly evaluate the 2021 incident,” said AG Raoul in a statement.
