Illinois AG Filed Agreed Interim Order Requiring Marathon to Address Impacts of Crude Oil Spill
MARCH 13, 2023
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a second agreed interim order requiring Marathon Pipe Line LLC to investigate a heavy crude oil spill. The pipeline spill, which occurred in March 2022, released 147,000 gallons of heavy crude oil into a creek surrounded by residential, commercial, agricultural, and forested areas, as well as a wetland. AG Raoul initially filed a lawsuit the same month as the spill; litigation is ongoing. The March 2023 order required the company to develop and submit a plan to investigate and address the impacts of the spill, to reimburse the state for costs related to overseeing the order, and report monthly on work related to the order.
