Fifteen AGs Sent Comments Urging the Postal Service to Include More Electric Vehicles in its New Delivery Fleet
AUGUST 14, 2023
New York Attorney General Letitia James led a coalition of 15 attorneys general in sending comments responding to the U.S. Postal Service’s (USPS) draft supplemental environmental impact statement for its next fleet of delivery vehicles. In their comments, the AGs argued that in order to fully comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), USPS must complete a more robust environmental analysis and examine a “full range of reasonable alternatives,” and that no commitments to gas-powered vehicles should be made until a more thorough review has been conducted. Accordingly, the AGs urged USPS to consider including a higher percentage of electric vehicles in its new fleet than the proposed 62%. The AGs also called on USPS to strengthen its environmental justice review of the proposal by more fully considering the effects a gas-powered delivery fleet would have on communities already overburdened with pollution.
