Fifteen AGs Filed Comments Opposing Changes to Energy Department’s Energy Conservation Program

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra led a coalition of 15 state attorneys general in filing comments opposing an Energy Department proposal that would limit federal regulators’ ability to set more ambitious standards for a wide range of products covered under the highly successful Energy Conservation Program for Consumer Products. In their comment letter, the attorneys general questioned the need for updating the current review process and noted that the Energy Conservation Program is on track to save consumers $2 trillion dollars in energy costs by 2030. The Energy Conservation Program has also yielded significant greenhouse gas emission reductions, and the proposed rule would limit future reductions by contravening Congress’s intent to steadily increase the number of products covered by energy efficiency standards.
