District of Columbia AG Reached Settlement with Pepco over Decades of Toxic Pollution

District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb reached a $57 million settlement with the Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) resolving allegations that the company illegally discharged toxic chemicals into soil, groundwater, and storm sewers for several decades, leading to pollution of the Anacostia River. Under the settlement, the company was required to pay $10 million in penalties, on top of $47 million to clean up the river. The company was also ordered to clean up contamination at its facilities, investigate the environmental impacts of its underground transformer vaults that span the District, and pay for oversight of this work.
