District of Columbia AG Announced $2 Million Settlement with Landlord for Hazardous Living Conditions

District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced that the landlords of two affordable housing apartment complexes in Washington, D.C. will pay a total of $2 million in penalties and restitution for violating housing codes and threatening the health of over 400 tenants. Violations included unsafe living conditions, such as “rodent and bug infestations, leaks and water damage, broken plumbing fixtures, broken and insecure doors and windows, missing smoke detectors, chipping and peeling lead-based paint, structural issues, and numerous other problems at the properties.” The companies were required to compensate tenants with rent credits, pay penalties to the District of Columbia, and bring the properties up to code.
