California AG Filed Petitions Seeking Plastics Industry Compliance with Investigation

California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed two petitions asking a California court to compel the Plastics Industry Association and the American Chemistry Council to comply with investigative subpoenas. The AG’s office issued the subpoenas in August 2022 and December 2023 as part of its investigation into the role of the fossil fuel and petrochemical industries in the plastics pollution crisis. AG Bonta sought specific documents related to the companies’ campaigns to convince the public about the recyclability of plastic and the alleged benefits of chemical recycling. In May 2024, both companies filed lawsuits attempting to prevent the AG’s office from enforcing the subpoenas, prompting AG Bonta to file these two petitions.
