Massachusetts AG Secured Settlement over Illegal Asphalt Manufacturing Operations

Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey secured a settlement requiring a construction materials supply company to pay $1.45 million in penalties for violations of the Massachusetts Clean Air Act related to illegal manufacturing of asbestos. The company was also required to retrofit its facility to prevent future harm to neighboring communities. The company’s unpermitted manufacturing of asbestos created a public nuisance by releasing emissions of particulate matter, volatile organic compounds and noxious odors that were reportedly detectable as far as three miles from the site.
