New York AG Settled Illegal Waste Dumping Suit

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that her office reached agreements in its lawsuit against companies and individuals who had been illegally dumping construction waste in Brentwood, Long Island, securing $627,000 in damages. Beginning in 2013, thirty-three companies and individuals dumped nearly 40,000 tons of hazardous construction waste in Brentwood’s Roberto Clemente Park. After environmental testing found asbestos, toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and pesticides, the park was closed for cleanup. AG James brought a federal lawsuit against the construction contractors, waste brokers, and waste haulers involved in the polluting. The money from the settlement was designated to be used for improvements to parks in Brentwood, after the illegal dumping restricted access to one of the community’s major parks for over three years. This settlement resolved the lawsuit against six of the companies; legal actions against the remaining polluters named in the lawsuit were still ongoing at this time of this settlement.
