Michigan AG Submitted Testimony to Protect Ratepayers against Excessive Electricity Rate Increase
JUNE 24, 2020
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel submitted testimony to the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) to protect ratepayers against an excessive electricity rate increase request filed by Consumers Energy. The company sought a rate increase of $244 million, which would increase electric bills for residential customers by 14 percent. The testimony submitted by AG Nessel’s office argued for a rate increase of no more than $20.7 million, and emphasized that the increased costs should be fairly distributed among residential, commercial and industrial ratepayers. AG Nessel also submitted testimony offering recommendations to improve and expand assistance programs for low-income customers.
