Illinois AG Filed Lawsuit and Interim Order against Company Responsible for Sulfur Dioxide Emissions

Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul filed a lawsuit against and secured an agreed interim order with Phillips 66, a company whose facility released dangerous sulfur dioxide emissions. In the lawsuit, AG Raoul alleged that Phillip 66’s activity posed a substantial danger to nearby residents and to the environment. The lawsuit sought civil penalties under the Illinois Environmental Protection Act. The interim order required Phillips 66 to take immediate action to investigate the incident involving contaminated sulfuric acid and to develop procedures to prevent future incidents.
