California AG Prioritized on Environmental Justice in Local Land Use Planning

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced a settlement with the City of Huntington Park for failing to meet standards created by SB 1000, a California law that mandates local governments consider environmental justice in their land use planning. Residents of Huntington Park struggle with some of the highest rates of pollution in the state, but when the city submitted its plans for 2030, it did not meet any environmental justice requirements set out by state law. Through a series of specific steps, the settlement required the city to create a community engagement program, identify environmental justice communities, and reduce pollution in those communities, among other steps.
